Sonographer Job Description

Logandale NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Logandale NV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Logandale NV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Logandale NV hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Nevada or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Logandale NVAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Logandale NV outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Logandale home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Logandale NV ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Logandale NV area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Logandale NV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Logandale NV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Logandale health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Logandale NV home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Logandale NV area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Logandale, Nevada

Logandale is an unincorporated town located in Clark County, Nevada. The community is the home of the annual Clark County Fair and Rodeo. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department patrols the town.

Established on the west side of the Muddy River in 1865, Logandale was originally named West Point. It was enlarged and renamed Saint Joseph in 1868, by settlers driven out of their first town of Saint Joseph, Nevada on the east side of the Muddy River when it burned down. It also acquired the post office established in the old town on August 26, 1867.

The new Saint Joseph like the other Mormon settlements in the Moapa Valley was abandoned in 1871 due to a tax dispute with the state of Nevada. Its post office closed in October 1871 but became active again on in May 1876. Following the Mormon return to Overton in 1880, in November 1883 the post office operations were moved there.[1]:208
