Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Lamoille NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lamoille NV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Lamoille NV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Lamoille NV hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Nevada or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lamoille NVAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Lamoille NV hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lamoille home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lamoille NV ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lamoille NV area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lamoille NV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Lamoille NV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Lamoille medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Lamoille NV residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lamoille NV area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
