Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Wellfleet NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Wellfleet NE hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Wellfleet NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Wellfleet NE clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Nebraska or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wellfleet NEAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wellfleet NE hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Wellfleet home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Wellfleet NE ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wellfleet NE area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wellfleet NE health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Wellfleet NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Wellfleet medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Wellfleet NE residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wellfleet NE area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
