Sonographer Work Summary

Cedar Creek NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Cedar Creek NE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Cedar Creek NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Cedar Creek NE clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Nebraska or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Cedar Creek NEAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cedar Creek NE outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cedar Creek home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Cedar Creek NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cedar Creek NE area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Cedar Creek NE health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Cedar Creek NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Cedar Creek health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Cedar Creek NE residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cedar Creek NE area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
