Sonogram Tech Job Description

Burwell NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Burwell NE hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Burwell NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Burwell NE hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Nebraska or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Burwell NEAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Burwell NE hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Burwell home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Burwell NE ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Burwell NE area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Burwell NE employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Burwell NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Burwell health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Burwell NE home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Burwell NE area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
