Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Bellevue NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Bellevue NE clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bellevue NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Bellevue NE hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Nebraska or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bellevue NEAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Bellevue NE outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bellevue home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Bellevue NE ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bellevue NE area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bellevue NE employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Bellevue NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Bellevue healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Bellevue NE home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bellevue NE area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
