Sonographer Occupation Summary

Beaver City NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Beaver City NE clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Beaver City NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Beaver City NE clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Nebraska or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Beaver City NEAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Beaver City NE hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Beaver City home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Beaver City NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Beaver City NE area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Beaver City NE health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Beaver City NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Beaver City health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Beaver City NE home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Beaver City NE area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
