Sonogram Tech Job Description

Martin City MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Martin City MT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Martin City MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Martin City MT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Montana or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Martin City MTAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Martin City MT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Martin City home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Martin City MT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Martin City MT area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Martin City MT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Martin City MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Martin City healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Martin City MT residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Martin City MT area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
