Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Morrison MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Morrison MO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Morrison MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Morrison MO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Missouri or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Morrison MOAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Morrison MO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Morrison home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Morrison MO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Morrison MO area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Morrison MO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Morrison MO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Morrison health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Morrison MO residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Morrison MO area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
