Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Greentop MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Greentop MO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Greentop MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Greentop MO clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Missouri or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Greentop MOAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Greentop MO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Greentop home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Greentop MO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Greentop MO area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Greentop MO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Greentop MO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Greentop healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Greentop MO home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Greentop MO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
