Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Ethel MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ethel MO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ethel MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Ethel MO hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Missouri or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Ethel MOAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ethel MO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Ethel home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Ethel MO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ethel MO area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ethel MO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Ethel MO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Ethel healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Ethel MO home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ethel MO area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
