Diggins was laid out in 1887, and named after one Mr. Diggins, a railroad official. The site was previously known as Cut Throat, Stella and Livingston.[6] A post office called Diggins has been in operation since 1886.[7]

Diggins is located on the southeastern edge of the Springfield Plateau in the Ozarks of south central Missouri.
