Sonogram Tech Job Description

Cosby MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Cosby MO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Cosby MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Cosby MO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Missouri or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cosby MOAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cosby MO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cosby home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Cosby MO ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cosby MO area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cosby MO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Cosby MO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Cosby healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Cosby MO home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cosby MO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
