They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cassville MO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Cassville MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Cassville MO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Missouri or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cassville MOAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Cassville MO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Cassville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cassville MO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cassville MO area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cassville MO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Cassville MO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Cassville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Cassville MO home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cassville MO area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
