Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Terry MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Terry MS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Terry MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Terry MS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Terry MSAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Terry MS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Terry home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Terry MS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Terry MS area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Terry MS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Terry MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Terry healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Terry MS home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Terry MS area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
