Scooba MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Scooba MS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Scooba MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Scooba MS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Scooba MSAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Scooba MS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Scooba home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Scooba MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Scooba MS area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Scooba MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Scooba MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Scooba healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Scooba MS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Scooba MS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
