Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Zumbro Falls MN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Zumbro Falls MN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Zumbro Falls MN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Zumbro Falls MN clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Minnesota or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Zumbro Falls MNAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Zumbro Falls MN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Zumbro Falls home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Zumbro Falls MN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Zumbro Falls MN area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Zumbro Falls MN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Zumbro Falls MN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Zumbro Falls healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Minnesota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Zumbro Falls MN home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Zumbro Falls MN area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
