Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Petersburg MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Petersburg MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Petersburg MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Petersburg MI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you elect to practice in.

So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Petersburg MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Petersburg home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Petersburg MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Petersburg MI area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Petersburg MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Petersburg MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Petersburg healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Petersburg MI residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Petersburg MI area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
