Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Morenci MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Morenci MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Morenci MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Morenci MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Morenci MIAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Morenci MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Morenci home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Morenci MI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Morenci MI area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Morenci MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Morenci MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Morenci healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Morenci MI home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Morenci MI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
