Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Melvindale MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Melvindale MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Melvindale MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Melvindale MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Melvindale MIAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Melvindale MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Melvindale home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Melvindale MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Melvindale MI area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Melvindale MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Melvindale MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Melvindale medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Melvindale MI home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Melvindale MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
