Sonographer Occupation Summary

Linden MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Linden MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Linden MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Linden MI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Linden MIAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Linden MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Linden home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Linden MI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Linden MI area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Linden MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Linden MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Linden health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Linden MI home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Linden MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
