Sonographer Job Summary

Leonidas MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Leonidas MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Leonidas MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Leonidas MI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Leonidas MIAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Leonidas MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Leonidas home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Leonidas MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Leonidas MI area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Leonidas MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Leonidas MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Leonidas health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Leonidas MI residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Leonidas MI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
