Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Kingsford MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Kingsford MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Kingsford MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Kingsford MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Kingsford MIAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Kingsford MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kingsford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Kingsford MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kingsford MI area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kingsford MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Kingsford MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kingsford healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Kingsford MI residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Kingsford MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
