Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Fowler MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Fowler MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Fowler MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Fowler MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Fowler MIAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fowler MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Fowler home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Fowler MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fowler MI area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Fowler MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Fowler MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Fowler health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Fowler MI residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fowler MI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
