Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Drayton Plains MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Drayton Plains MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Drayton Plains MI home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Drayton Plains MI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
