First, you need to find the right program that will provide the necessary education to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internship programs. Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Centreville MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Centreville MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Centreville MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Centreville MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Centreville MIAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Centreville MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Centreville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Centreville MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Centreville MI area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Centreville MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Centreville MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Centreville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Centreville MI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Centreville MI area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
