Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Blissfield MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Blissfield MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Blissfield MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Blissfield MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Blissfield MIAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Blissfield MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Blissfield home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Blissfield MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Blissfield MI area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Blissfield MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Blissfield MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Blissfield medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Blissfield MI home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Blissfield MI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Blissfield, Michigan

Blissfield is a village in Lenawee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,340 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Blissfield Township. The Blissfield post office first opened March 28, 1828.[6] Hervey Bliss, who was the first white settler in 1824 and for whom the town is named, was the first postmaster.[7]

During World War II, 16 German POWs, who were working on a sugar beet farm near Blissfield, were killed in an accident when their truck collided with a train as they were returning to Fort Custer. They are now buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery.

According to local legend, Blissfield was home to the first set of Triple Bridges in the world. These three bridges stood directly next to each other and crossed the River Raisin to accommodate train and vehicular travel. Throughout time, the two vehicular bridges were replaced with one. Recently though, a pedestrian bridge was erected to restore the heritage of the Triple Bridges.[citation needed]
