Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Bedford MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bedford MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Bedford MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Bedford MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bedford home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Bedford MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bedford MI area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bedford MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Bedford MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bedford medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Bedford MI residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bedford MI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
