Needham MA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Needham MA, it’s time to begin the process of selecting a school. First, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training options that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Needham MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Needham MA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Needham MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Needham MA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Massachusetts or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Needham MAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Needham MA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Needham home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Needham MA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Needham MA area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Needham MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Needham MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Needham health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Needham MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Needham MA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Needham was first settled in 1680 with the purchase of a tract of land measuring 4 miles (6.4 km) by 5 miles (8.0 km) from Chief Nehoiden for the sum of 10 pounds, 40 acres (160,000 m2) of land, and 40 shillings worth of corn. It was officially incorporated in 1711. Originally part of the Dedham Grant, Needham split from Dedham and was named after the town of Needham Market in Suffolk, England. By the 1770s settlers in the western part of the town who had to travel a long distance to the meeting house on what is now Central Avenue sought to form a second parish in the town. Opposition to this desire created conflict, and in 1774 a mysterious fire destroyed the extant meeting house. Some time afterwards the West Parish was formed.

In 1857 the City of Boston began a project to fill in the Back Bay with landfill by filling the tidewater flats of the Charles River. The fill to reclaim the bay from the water was obtained from Needham, Massachusetts from the area of present-day Route 128. The firm of Goss and Munson, railroad contractors, built 6 miles (9.7 km) of railroad from Needham and their 35-car trains made 16 trips a day to Back Bay.[1] The filling of present-day Back Bay was completed by 1882; filling reached Kenmore Square in 1890, and finished in the Fens in 1900. The project was the largest of a number of land reclamation projects, beginning in 1820, which, over the course of time, more than doubled the size of the original Boston peninsula.

In 1865, William Carter established a knitting mill company in Needham Heights that would eventually become a major manufacturer and leading brand of children's apparel in the United States. The site of Mill #1 currently houses the Avery Manor assisted living center, while Mill #2 stood along the shores of Rosemary Lake. By the 1960s, the company owned seven mills in Massachusetts and the south. The Carter family sold the business in 1990, after which Carter's, Inc. moved its headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia.[2]
