Methuen MA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Methuen MA, the next step is to begin the procedure of picking a school. First, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate instruction to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to evaluate and compare your options. But just where does one start? Many potential students will begin by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training options that are available.

Sonographer Job Description

Methuen MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Methuen MA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Methuen MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Methuen MA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Massachusetts or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Methuen MAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Methuen MA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Methuen home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Methuen MA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Methuen MA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Methuen MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Methuen MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Methuen healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Methuen MA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Methuen MA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Methuen, Massachusetts

Methuen /mɛˈθuːɛn/ is a statutory city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 47,255 at the 2010 census.[2] Methuen lies along the northwestern edge of Essex County, just east of Middlesex County and just south of Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The irregularly-shaped town is bordered by Haverhill to the northeast, North Andover to the east, Lawrence and Andover to the south, Dracut (Middlesex County) to the west, Pelham, New Hampshire (Hillsborough County) to the northwest, and Salem, New Hampshire (Rockingham County) to the north. Methuen is located 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Boston and 25 miles (40 km) south-southeast of Manchester, New Hampshire.

Methuen was first settled in 1642 and was officially incorporated in 1726. Methuen was originally part of Haverhill, Massachusetts. In 1724 Stephen Barker and others in the western part of that town petitioned the General Court to grant them permission to form a new town above Hawke's Meadow Brook. Although opposed by their fellow townsmen, the petition was approved the following year (December 8, 1725), and the General Court gave them an act of incorporation under the name of Methuen. The town was named for Sir Paul Methuen, a member of the King's Privy Council and friend of acting Provincial Governor William Dummer. The first town meeting was held March 9, 1726, in the home of a resident. Land was set aside for a meetinghouse, which was erected later in 1726 on what is now Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery.[3]

The residents in the northern part of the new town of Methuen soon petitioned to have their own meetinghouse (a combination of town hall and puritan church), and in 1736 the north parish was set off. Land for a meetinghouse was donated by descendants of the original proprietors of Haverhill, and in 1738 the second Methuen meetinghouse was raised. The structure survives to this day, as the Salem N.H. Historical Society building. In 1741, with the fixing of the Northern boundary of Massachusetts, most of this new north parish was removed from Methuen and placed in New Hampshire. It was incorporated as Salem, New Hampshire in 1750.[3]
