Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Andover MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Andover MA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Andover MA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Andover MA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Massachusetts or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Andover MAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Andover MA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Andover home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Andover MA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Andover MA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Andover MA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Andover MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Andover health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Andover MA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Andover MA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Andover, Massachusetts

Andover is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. It was settled in 1642 and incorporated in 1646.[3] As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,201.[4] It is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Massachusetts-New Hampshire metropolitan statistical area. Part of the town comprises the census-designated place of Andover. It is twinned with its namesake: Andover, Hampshire, England.[5][6]

In 1642, the Massachusetts General Court set aside a portion of land in what is now Essex County for an inland plantation, including parts of what is now Andover, North Andover and South Lawrence. In order to encourage settlement, early colonists were offered three years' immunity from taxes, levies, and services (except military service). The first permanent settlement in the Andover area was established in 1642 by John Woodbridge and a group of settlers from Newbury and Ipswich.

Shortly after they arrived, they purchased a piece of land from the local Pennacook tribal chief Cutshamache for "six pounds of currency and a coat" and on the condition that Roger, a local Pennacook man, would be allowed to plant his corn and take alewives from a local water source. Roger's Brook, a small stream which cuts through the eastern part of town, is named in his honor. In May 1646 the settlement was incorporated as a town and was named Andover. This name was likely chosen in honor of the town of Andover in England, which was near the original home of some of the first residents. The first recorded town meeting was held in 1656 in the home of settler John Osgood in what is now North Andover.
