Cumberland MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Cumberland MD clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Cumberland MD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maryland or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cumberland MDAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cumberland MD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cumberland home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cumberland MD ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cumberland MD area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cumberland MD employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Cumberland MD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Cumberland healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Cumberland MD home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cumberland MD area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Cumberland, Maryland

Cumberland is a city in and the county seat of Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is the primary city of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 20,859, and the metropolitan area had a population of 103,299. Located on the Potomac River, Cumberland is a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia.

Historically Cumberland was known as the "Queen City", as it was once the second largest in the state. Because of its strategic location on what became known as the Cumberland Road through the Appalachians, after the American Revolution it served as a historical outfitting and staging point for westward emigrant trail migrations throughout the first half of the 1800s. In this role, it supported the settlement of the Ohio Country and the lands in that latitude of the Louisiana Purchase. It also became an industrial center, served by major roads, railroads, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which connected Cumberland to Washington, D.C. and is now a national park. Today, Interstate 68 bisects the town.

Industry declined after World War II. Much of the later urban, business and technological development in the state has been concentrated in eastern coastal cities. Today the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area is one of the poorest in the United States, ranking 305th out of 318 metropolitan areas in per capita income.[4]
