Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Southport ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Southport ME clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Southport ME ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Southport ME clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maine or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Southport MEAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Southport ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Southport home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Southport ME ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Southport ME area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Southport ME health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Southport ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Southport medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Southport ME residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Southport ME area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
