Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Hahnville LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Hahnville LA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Hahnville LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Hahnville LA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hahnville LAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hahnville LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Hahnville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hahnville LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hahnville LA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hahnville LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Hahnville LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Hahnville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Hahnville LA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hahnville LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
