Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Majestic KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Majestic KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Majestic KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Majestic KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Majestic KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Majestic KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Majestic home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Majestic KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Majestic KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Majestic KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Majestic KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Majestic medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Majestic KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Majestic KY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
