Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Mayetta KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Mayetta KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Mayetta KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Mayetta KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mayetta KSAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Mayetta KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Mayetta home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Mayetta KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mayetta KS area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Mayetta KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Mayetta KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Mayetta healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Mayetta KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mayetta KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
