Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Bogue KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bogue KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Bogue KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Bogue KS hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bogue KSAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bogue KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Bogue home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Bogue KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bogue KS area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bogue KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Bogue KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Bogue healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Bogue KS residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bogue KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
