They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Pleasantville IA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Pleasantville IA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Pleasantville IA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Iowa or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Pleasantville IAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pleasantville IA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Pleasantville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Pleasantville IA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pleasantville IA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pleasantville IA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Pleasantville IA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Pleasantville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Pleasantville IA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pleasantville IA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Pleasantville, Iowa

Pleasantville was surveyed and established as a town on August 1, 1849 on land then owned by William Wesley Jordan. Previous to the ownership of Mr. Jordan, the land comprising the original town plot of Pleasantville changed hands for one horse and $30.

The completion of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad Line through Pleasantville in 1879 caused an increase in development and Pleasantville became one of the active business centers in Marion County and the principal shipping point between Knoxville and Des Moines.

The first school was built in the fall of 1847, and in 1868, the school district joined with the Masonic Lodge in building a three story brick building that remained a school facility until 1992. Today, the Pleasantville School district consists of three buildings, an elementary, a middle school, and a high school.
