Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Thorntown IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Thorntown IN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Thorntown IN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Thorntown IN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Indiana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Thorntown INAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Thorntown IN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Thorntown home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Thorntown IN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Thorntown IN area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thorntown IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Thorntown IN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Thorntown healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Thorntown IN home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Thorntown IN area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
