Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

South Whitley IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in South Whitley IN clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

South Whitley IN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through South Whitley IN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Indiana or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in South Whitley INAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local South Whitley IN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your South Whitley home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask South Whitley IN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the South Whitley IN area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous South Whitley IN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with South Whitley IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the South Whitley health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their South Whitley IN home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Whitley IN area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
