Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Dunreith IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dunreith IN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Dunreith IN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Dunreith IN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Indiana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Dunreith INAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dunreith IN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Dunreith home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Dunreith IN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Dunreith IN area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Dunreith IN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Dunreith IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Dunreith health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Dunreith IN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dunreith IN area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
