Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Delong IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Delong IN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Delong IN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Delong IN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Indiana or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Delong INAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Delong IN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Delong home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Delong IN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Delong IN area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Delong IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Delong IN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Delong medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Delong IN residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Delong IN area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Robert DeLong

Robert Charles Edward DeLong (born February 18, 1986)[3] is an American electronic musician from Bothell, Washington and currently residing in Los Angeles, California. With a background in percussion and influences from a number of indie rock bands, DeLong's primary genres include house, dubstep, and moombahton. He has released two full-length albums on Glassnote Records: Just Movement in January 2013 and In the Cards in September 2015, along with the EP Long Way Down in November 2014. He also has many unreleased albums and songs.

DeLong grew up in the Seattle suburb of Bothell.[4] His father was a drummer.[5] Robert played in various bands while he was in high school. He studied drums at Azusa Pacific University,[6] partially supported by a scholarship.[7] While in college, he played in the band The Denouement[8][9] and settled in Los Angeles after graduation.

DeLong started as a drummer for indie rock bands[1] but added more electronic elements to his compositions following his exposure to their use at raves.[2] DeLong is notable for using video-game peripherals, such as a Wii remote and a joystick, connected to a MIDI interface, to modify his sound. He cites as influences Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Dreamers, and Boards of Canada, among others.[10] He released his first full-length album, Just Movement, on Glassnote Records on 5 February 2013. His sound has been described by Wired Magazine as a merger of "electronic dance music, alt rock, and vocals into tracks that are poppy enough to make you move but dissonant enough to be interesting."[11] At live performances, facepaint is offered to be put on the fans by volunteer local artists that are organized and led by Delong's longtime partner, visual artist Heidi Callaway. Facepaint is offered for free throughout the shows and creates a sense of community amongst the fans. His equipment and clothing feature an orange "X" logo; this same logo, or a variant of it, is often painted on his face and those of his fans.[5]
