Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Bowling Green IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bowling Green IN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Bowling Green IN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Bowling Green IN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Indiana or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bowling Green INAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bowling Green IN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Bowling Green home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Bowling Green IN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bowling Green IN area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bowling Green IN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Bowling Green IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bowling Green health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Bowling Green IN home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bowling Green IN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Bowling Green State University

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is a large, primarily residential, public research university located in Bowling Green, Ohio, United States. The 1,338-acre (541.5 ha) main academic and residential campus is located 15 miles (24 km) south of Toledo, Ohio. The University has nationally recognized programs and research facilities in the natural and social sciences, education, arts, business, health and wellness, humanities and applied technologies[4]. The institution was granted a charter in 1910 as a normal school, specializing in teacher training and education, as part of the Lowry Normal School Bill that authorized two new normal schools in the state of Ohio. Over the university's history, it developed from a small rural normal school into a comprehensive public university.

As of 2017[update] Bowling Green offered over 200 undergraduate programs,[5] as well as master's and doctoral degrees through eight academic colleges. Its academic programs have been nationally ranked by Forbes magazine, U.S. News & World Report, and Washington Monthly. The University is also ranked the most affordable college in Ohio by Business Insider in 2018[6]. Additionally, in 2018 BGSU received designation as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity (IEP) university by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and its Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity[7]. The 2011 Carnegie Foundation classified BGSU as having "high research activity". Research projects in the areas of psychology, sociology, education and human development, energy and sustainability are among the most prominent.[8] BGSU had an on-campus residential student population of approximately 6,000 students[9] and a total enrollment of over 19,000 students as of 2018[update].[10] The university also maintains a satellite campus, known as BGSU Firelands, in Huron, Ohio, 60 miles (97 km) east of the main campus. Although the majority of students attend classes on BGSU's main campus,[10][11] about 2,000 students attend classes at Firelands and about 600 additional students attend online. About 85% of Bowling Green's students are from Ohio.[10]

The university hosts an extensive student life program, with over 300 student organizations. Fielding athletic teams known as Bowling Green Falcons, the university competes at the NCAA Division I level (FBS for football) as a member of the Mid-American Conference in all sports except ice hockey, in which the university is a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The campus is home to annual events including the Dance Marathon (a student-organized philanthropy event)[12] and State Fire School.[13]
