Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Amo IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Amo IN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Amo IN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Amo IN clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Indiana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Amo INAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Amo IN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Amo home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Amo IN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Amo IN area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Amo IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Amo IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Amo health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Amo IN home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Amo IN area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
