Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Zeigler IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Zeigler IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Zeigler IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Zeigler IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Zeigler ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Zeigler IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Zeigler home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Zeigler IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Zeigler IL area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Zeigler IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Zeigler IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Zeigler medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Zeigler IL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Zeigler IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
