Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Wauconda IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Wauconda IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Wauconda IL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Wauconda ILAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Wauconda IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Wauconda home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Wauconda IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Wauconda IL area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Wauconda IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Wauconda IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Wauconda health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Wauconda IL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wauconda IL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
