Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Piasa IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Piasa IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Piasa IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Piasa IL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Piasa ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Piasa IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Piasa home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Piasa IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Piasa IL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Piasa IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Piasa IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Piasa medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Piasa IL home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Piasa IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
