Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Minonk IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Minonk IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Minonk IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Minonk IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Minonk ILAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Minonk IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Minonk home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Minonk IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Minonk IL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Minonk IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Minonk IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Minonk healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Minonk IL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Minonk IL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
