Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Maywood IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Maywood IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Maywood IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Maywood IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Maywood ILAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Maywood IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Maywood home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Maywood IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Maywood IL area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Maywood IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Maywood IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Maywood healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Maywood IL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Maywood IL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Maywood, Illinois

Maywood is a village in Proviso Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded on April 6, 1869,[3] and organized October 22, 1881.[4] The population was 24,090 at the 2010 United States Census.[5]

Prehistoric Lake Chicago influenced the area's topography some 14,000 years ago, as a pattern of glacial advance, "still stand" stages, and retreat deposited ridges of till. Within this glacial system, the advance of larger Lake Chicago had claimed its most westward beach head paralleling today's Mannheim Road. When the rising lake water finally retreated, a glacial lake remained. Its bed resulted in the flat plateau of present-day Maywood. For thousands of years, indigenous cultures lived in the area. The last historic tribes were pushed west in the face of European-American settlement in the early 19th century.

There was limited European-American settlement here before a railroad was constructed through the area after the American Civil War, with the rise of Chicago. But at least one house in what became Maywood was used as a station on the Underground Railroad, to aid refugee African-American slaves in escaping to freedom in the North. Some settled in the free state of Illinois; others went on to Canada, seeking further distance from American slavery. The site of the former house has been nationally commemorated. The plaque is located at today's Lake Street and the Des Plaines River bridge.[6]
