Godfrey IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Most practice in Godfrey IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Godfrey IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Godfrey IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Godfrey ILAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Godfrey IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Godfrey home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Godfrey IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Godfrey IL area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Godfrey IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Godfrey IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Godfrey medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Godfrey IL home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Godfrey IL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
